Excite Search End of Life FAQ

On September 30, 2003, Excite Search reached its end-of-life with Verio, and no longer functions on any Verio shared Web hosting plans. As a replacement for Excite Search, we offer our freely available htdig search product.

You may be asking why Excite Search has been retired by Verio and why we have implemented htdig in its place. To answer that question and others, we provide the following sets of questions and answers:

Q: Why has Excite Search been discontinued by Verio?
A: We want to provide our customers with a single Web site search engine that works on more than just one platform. Excite Search functioned on only the IRIX platform, while htdig works on both IRIX and on FreeBSD.

Q: What advantages does htdig have over Excite Search?
A: In addition to working on more platforms than Excite Search, htdig is open source software. This means that its source code can be constantly improved, tweaked, and tailored without infringing on any proprietary copyrights. This gives you the freedom to modify that code, if necessary, as you see fit.

Q: If I haven't removed Excite Search by September 30, 2003, will it continue to function after that date?
A: No, Excite Search will not function after September 30th.

Q: Can I migrate my Excite Search data files to htdig?
A: Sorry, we do not offer migration support. However, we are sure that the new search database that is created by htdig will easily fill the needs of your Web site.

Q: Is installing and maintaining htdig easy to do?
A: Installing and maintaining htdig is very easy. In fact, to install it, all you need to do is perform a click of your computer mouse. For more information on how to set up htdig, please go to How do I add a search function to my Website?

Q: Is htdig really free?

A: As htdig is open source software, its source code is completely free. And, yes, we are offering the htdig tool to you at no cost whatsoever.

Q: I have questions regarding htdig. Where do I go for answers?
A: The official htdig web site offers answers to many of the questions regarding setting up, running, and maintaining htdig.
